The municipality of Braganey (5,382 inhabitants in 2020; 34,332 ha) is
located 500 km west of Curitiba.
Braganey emerged as the settlement of
Rio Tigre, located close to the river of the same name in the municipality of
Corbélia. The district of Braganey was established in 1977, to be elevated a
municipality in 1982.
Braganey was named for Ney Aminthas de Barro Braga
(1917-2000), a former Governor of Paraná (1961-1965 and 1979-1982; also Federal
Minister of Agriculture (1965-1966) and of Education, 1974-1978)). The odd
juxtaposition of the governor's name and surname was a convenient way to bypass
legislation that recommended not to name places for people still alive.
