The municipality of Videira (53,065 inhabitants in 2019; 38,413 ha) is
located 380 km west of Florianópolis. The municipality is composed of the
districts of Videira (two sub-districts), Anta Gorda and Lourdes.
Videira
was settled in 1918 as Rio das Pedras (Stone River); to attract more colonists,
the place was renamed to Perdizes (Partridges) in 1918. The district of Perdizes
was established within the municipality of Novo Campo by State Law No. 337
promulgated on 12 April 1927.
The municipality of Videira was established by
State Law-Decree No. 941 promulgated on 31 December 1943.
The name of the
municipality (Grapevine) recalls that Videira is Santa Catarina's Capital of
Grapes and of Sparkling Wine. The local tradition recalls that a bunch of grapes
of 1.3 kg in weight was harvested in 1913.
