Shield Gules, a lion statant Or on top of a basement Argent masoned Sable, in dexter chief a 8-point star Or.
Meaning:
Schöningen gained city rights around 1320. From first main seal there are prints since 1332, displaying a lion passant between wreaths and an 8-point star in top. The 2nd seal from the 15th century already displayed the current pattern, in between the lion had been alone but in the 18th century the current pattern was restored. The tinctures were first mentioned in the Sassenchronik roll of arms in 1492. They became common in the 19th century. The lion is that one of the Welfen kin, rulers since 1180 as heirs of the Counts of Sommerschenburg. The original of the basement is in Braunschweig as part of the famous lion-monument from 1166. The star had been a 6-point star Argent at least until 1970.
