Bry-sur-Marne (17,400 inhabitants in 2021; 335 ha), is a commune in the Val-de-Marne department in the eastern suburbs of Paris.
Bry's name comes from the Celtic word menaing bridge or river crossing. The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times. In 1886, a necropolis was found which contained pottery, Gaul and Frankish weaponry, jewelry and coins, dating from the Gaul era to the Merovingian. The first known written mention of the town named Bry was in a charter signed by King Charles the Bald in 861.The first church was built in 1130.In 1404, Robert de Châtillon, cousin of King Charles VI, was Bry's feudal lord. His castle no longer stands, and its exact location is uncertain.
Bry's current château was built in the 1690s. It became the town hall in 1866. It was rebuilt after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Photographer Louis Daguerre died in Bry-sur-Marne in 1851, and Bry's most treasured artwork is a diorama painted by Louis Daguerre, kept in the local church.
The railway came to Bry in 1926, and the RER (commuter rail service) in 1977.
The largest employer today is the INA (National Audiovisual Institute)
which has its head office in the heights of Bry-sur-Marne where more
than 1000 people are employed. The Bry studios inherited from the SFP
(national French production company), the most modern and largest film
studios in France with 8 film sets and workshops spread over 13 ha
have been taken over by the Transpalux group since 2015.

The coat of arms of Bry-sur-Marne is blazoned: Party per pale, 1. Azure a woodbridge of two piers on waves of the same issuant from the base, surmounted by a millwheel Or, 2.Gules an elm Or on a terrace in base of the same, the chief Vert three ears of wheat Argent. The town's motto, which features on its coat of arms, is "Moult viel que Paris" - old French for "Much older than Paris".
A logo inspired by the coat of arms in a blue monochrome version, with a red border under the crown, subtitled with the name of the municipality and its motto, was adopted in 2021.

A white flag with
this new logo has since 2021 been flying in the municipality: photo (2022).
In February 2023, a dark blue version of the flag with the logo in
white could be observed too.
No flag known before 2021.
