It was adopted with the motive of its 90th anniversary of becoming a city, on 16 November 1984. Its design was created by José Cruz Aguilera Rodarte, receiving $25,000 pesos for his work. It was adopted through a call for submissions, started on 15 August 1984 and receiving 24 submissions. The promoter of the idea was Jaime Soto Castro, Chronicler of the city. The outer border of the shield is the same as parchment, but its main border reads at the top 1894, when it was founded as a City. Below in a yellow rectangle is its name, LERDO, DGO. At the bottom is its nickname "CIUDAD JARDIN" [Garden City]. The shield is divided into three sections. To the left is a clock tower (interesting fact: it bears the shahada). To the upper-right are the city's agricultural products: cotton, wheat, grapes, and flowers. Water is necessary for their production. To the lower-left, a contour of the state of Durango that it is part of with a plane over it, remembering Francisco Sarabia Tinoco who was born here and its industrialization.
