Moordrecht municipality
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 8.085; area: 12,73 km². Settlements:
Moordrecht (seat).
Flagdescription: two equally wide horizontal stripes red - yellow,
with in the canton a white eight-pointed star.
The star is from the municipal arms; it appeared first in the 13th
century as the seal of the Lord of Moordrecht; he was probably a relative
of the Lords of Kralingen,
who used the same star.
The flag was used first in 1938 on the occasion of the jubilee of Queen
Wilhelmina's 40 years reign. Red and yellow were the colors of Zuid-Holland
province, and the canton was reserved for the municipal arms.
