It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of white and green.

Shield Vert, an eradicated pine tree Or, flanked by a branch of hazelnut Argent fruited Or at dexter and a cogwheel Argent at sinister. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "AVELÃS DE CIMA".
Meaning:
The hazelnut (Port.: "avelã" for the nut) is a canting element.
