It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain black field.

Coat of Arms

Shield Or with base wavy of Vert and Argent, charged with a tuna Sable eyed Gules, two hydrangeas Purpure stemmed and leafed Vert in fess, on central chief point a bladed wheel Sable. Mural crown with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with black inscription "FREGUESIA DE CALHETA".
Meaning:
The hydrangeas symbolise the beauty oft he landscape and are the characteristic flower oft he commune. The bladed wheel is an attribute of St. Catherine, the local patron saint. The base wavy is a representation of the Atlantic Ocean. The tuna stands for fishery and fish canning. Calheta is one oft he two oldest fishery ports of the São Jorge Island.

Calheta is one of the five communes of Calheta (Açores) Municipality; it had 3773 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 126,51 km².
