About a flag for heterosexuals

I believe the reason for non-existence of a flag for heterosexuals is the same that explains the general absence of specific symbology for any majority, either ethnic, social, etc.
António Martins, 4 February 2001

I have seen a proposed flag for heterosexuals. I believe the design was six horizontal stripes, N-W-N-W-N-W. The obvious reference is to the Rainbow Flag, essentially removed of its color.
Steve Kramer, 5 February 2001

I did see that design suggested at one point, but for the life of me, I can't find it now. It was, essentially, suggested by political conservatives who were generally opposed to the symbolism of a flag for a sexual orientation anyway; a quick online search indicates that many conservatives have rhetorically suggested such a symbol many times since, indicating that perhaps that is its main value.
Steve Kramer, 1 April 2005

Seems more like an anti-gay flag, or at least for sexual conservatism.
António Martins, 30 March 2005

I don't see it as either. I see the symbolism as more the yin and the yang of male and female, represented by the two most basic colours, coming together on the flag.
David Kendall, 31 March 2005

We could call it "the binarism flag." In a larger sense, since the Rainbow Flag stands generically for diversity in addition to symbolizing gay identity, this could be viewed as a complementary uniformity flag.
Eugene Ipavec, 31 March 2005

But in that case it would not be a real "heterosexual pride" flag, rather a "heterosexual supremacy" flag (it is difficult to separate these issues, especially when a majority is envolved, but it is possible), or even a flag against sexual orientation diversity.
António Martins, 3 April 2005

Despite this flag being potentially controversial, there are several examples of its use as the symbol of heterosexuality, viewed simply as one sexual orientation among many. At the Mexico City Pride 2017, a float was decorated with a number of sexual orientation flags, as well as several others which might have been the flags of some LGBT-related organizations; the heterosexuality flag was among those [1-4], but displayed with the colors reversed (i.e. white at the top). At the Diversity Parade 2022 in Curitiba, Brazil, the flag was also hoisted along with numerous other sexual orientation flags; considering the way of hoisting (all flags were hung on a clothesline with the clothespins), it is not possible to tell which side was meant to be the top - comparing with the other flags does not help, since most of them are known to be used without a fixed top side. While the above examples are indeed very few, it may be said that the flag, considering its displaying, is another one with "no right side up."

There are also a few examples of the flag hoisting with black at the top. A large mast with two yards was erected in St Peter Port, Guernsey, during the Channel Islands Pride in September 2018, on which numerous flags were hoisted, including those of the UK, Channel Islands and many sexual orientation flags; the heterosexuality flag was the third from the top of the rightmost row of flags hung from the bottom yard. [1] This mast was erected again in St Peter Port for the Channel Islands Pride in September 2020, but the arrangement of the flags differed: this time, the heterosexuality flag was the second from the bottom in one of inner rows hung from the top yard, right above the asexuality flag [2,3].

Based on the design of the Straight Ally Flag and the majority of observations, I believe that the correct position of the flag is the one with the black stripe at the top.

Heterosexual flag with intertwined blue male and pink female gender symbols, on the background of five horizontal stripes, alternating black and white, which makes three black and two white stripes. This is a variant of the previously posted flag with black gender symbols. The correct hoisting is with the male symbol pointing upwards.

"Super Straight" flag

[
image found by Martin Karner, 26 February 2025

The "Hungarian Conservative" website presents in an article from April 2021 the so-called "Super Straight Flag", which had been created by a TikTok user not long before. The term super straight is defined as a heterosexual individual, who is only attracted to members of the opposite sex who identify with their gender assigned at birth. The article states: "The meme, by the way, was invented by a TikTok user, as more of a joke than a serious approach to an actual problem, but nonetheless, it quickly took on as seemingly real online movement. In less than two weeks, the trend gained widespread popularity on alternative social media sites like Reddit and 4Chan, the users of which started a full-blown ‘visibility’ campaign on Twitter not long after, making their way into the mainstream political discourse." Although its ironic components, the creator of the flag got death threats and took down the original TikTok video. Nevertheless this movement seems to meet a real need. The article reports that also members of the gay, lesbian and bisexual scene jumped on the bandwagon, because they feel judged by their peers for their preferences and being called transphobic. The vertically divided black and orange flag may thus be decorated also with other symbols of sexuality.

Although not mentioned in the article, the "Super Straight Flag," vertically divided black and orange, alludes to the logo of a well-known adult video website which I cannot name here.
Miles Li, 26 February 2025

We live in a world of graphics and logos, coincidences like this one may happen. And whether that site is purely heterosexual, would have to be clarified first. Black and orange is an attractive combination, like red and white for example. But your supposition is not per se impossible, the creator of the flag is not without irony, and the message of the flag also has to do with sexual activity to a certain extent.

Straight pride flag

[Hetero pride flag]
image by Tomislav Todorović, 26 May 2015

An interesting "reaction" flag has resulted from the Gay Rights/Equal Marriage Movements of the early 2000s. The is called the Straight Pride Flag. It mimics the striped Gay Pride Rainbow by changing the rainbow colors into neutral shades of black, grey and white.

[2019 Straight Pride flag]

A "Straight Pride" parade was held today, Saturday, 31 August 2019, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Reactions to it were mixed but the sponsors, John Hugo and Samson Racioppi, unveiled their "Straight Pride" flag a few days before. The flag is rectangular, divided from upper hoist to lower fly, blue at the hoist and pink in the fly. Superimposed are a male and a female biological symbol intertwined, each in yellow with a black border. You can read The Boston Globe's article about the local reaction regarding the event and the organizers at https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/marijuana/2019/08/29/ignore-straight-pride-parade-fight-lgbtq-community-divided-over-how-respond/6DJxfIdOgM2puKqVL896dK/story.html. Apparently the event did not go so well, according to The Boston Globe: https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/08/31/counterprotesters-rally-across-city-from-straight-pride-parade-starting-point/qFStqXFPcWoOWAaxkDyDfI/story.html.
Dave Martucci, 31 August 2019

An image well executed, as usual, still there are some details which should be corrected:
  • most importantly, in the female sign, all four arms of the cross should have equal length;
  • also, black fimbriations of two signs should be wider; that should be corrected, though, so as not to reduce the width of yellow strokes, which is OK as it is now.

  • Other photos of this flag, displaying the above details better, can be found here: https://www.masslive.com/news/2019/08/counter-protesters-setup-bail-fund-to-prep-for-arrests-at-boston-straight-pride-parade-saturday.html and https://me.me/i/when-your-straight-pride-flag-looks-more-gay-than-the-7add9d46d3ce43a9936f04c41f30e019.

In the meantime, a variant of this flag with omitted black fimbriations of two signs, thus effectively conjoined into a single shape, is offered for sale here: http://dixiegiftshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=263. Also note that the relative position of the signs is somewhat changed there.

During this march, in this video one can see other flags that were spotted as well, such as:
  • Blue and Pink flag (0:24 onwards) (the flag in question)
  • "Gadsden flag" (0:26 onwards)
  • Israel (0:30 onwards)
  • "Thin Green Line Flag" (0:34 onwards)

  • Also a transgender flag is spotted as well in support of the march, as seen here: https://a57.foxnews.com/static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2019/09/1862/1048/Straight-Pride-1.jpg?ve=1&tl=1.1

Additionally, an adapted "U.S. version" of the Iron Front flag, is seen here (with a blue background, a red disc encircled in white outline with three white diagonal arrows pointing downward).2

Also, here's a graphic of the flag in its original design and resolution. It differs from the one just sent by Randy in the location of the diagonal line/stripe that divides the two colors, and also the pink color used by Randy is a little brighter than the actual flag, which is darker, sort of like magenta, but that can be a light effect by the original picture itself since the flag description states it is pink indeed.2

We have labeled the flag as "straight pride" but perhaps the right label would be "Blue and Pink flag" for the moment, as they mention on their official website.2

The advocacy group that promoted this "Straight pride" parade/march (as opposed to a "Gay pride" parade/march), and in fact an event scheduled during "Pride week" called "Super Happy Fun America," "advocates on behalf of the straight community in order to foster respect and awareness with people from all walks of life." 2

The flag is explained as follows: "The Blue and Pink flag, which has represented our community for over 0.6 years, is integral to our movement". They even intended to fly the flag at the end of the parade, as this statement shows: "The flag raising ceremony will take place immediately following the parade. The Blue and Pink flag will be raised over Boston City Hall. This will be followed by speeches and outreach to the community. We invite Mayor Martin J. Walsh to participate and express the city s support for the straight community". However, that request has been denied, as follows: "Unfortunately, the City of Boston has discriminated against our sexual orientation by denying us the opportunity to raise the flag at City Hall. We will continue to fight for equality until the Walsh administration embraces our community and a more progressive vision of the future." 2

A second flag is the Straight Ally flag and is less ambivalent. Using the black-white "colors" of the heterosexual flag as a field, it adds a large rainbow colored "A" (for "Ally") to indicate straight support for the Gay Pride/Equal Marriage movement.

These flags were indeed designed and widely used by the movement "La Manif Pour Tous," established in 2012 as a collective of associations and registered in 2015 as a political party. The flags are still in use. I should prepare a more detailed report on this one of these days.
