Howard County is located in central Indiana. Originally named Richardville County upon its founding in 1844, it was renamed in 1846 to honor Tilghman Howard, a US Representative from Indiana who was elected in 1839 and resigned in 1840 before dying in Texas in 1844 as the US chargé d'affairs to the Republic of Texas. While conducting my research, I found photographs at the Howard County Sheriff's Department website showing the department's flag (www.howardcosheriff.com/).

The Howard County Sheriff's Department flag is strikingly similar to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department flag and I believe may be part of a pattern to Indiana sheriff's department flags. The flag is brown with the sheriff's badge in the center of the field. The badge is in the shape of an ornate five-pointed star. The words "HOWARD"and "COUNTY" appear on an arch between the upper arms of the star. A circle in the center of the star bears the words "SHERIFF" and "INDIANA" with a scene representative of the county in the center.
