The flag was officially adopted in 1998.
The flag consists of a white
field with an emblem-like device. It consists of a golden ring with the township
name at the top and the bottom of the ring. Two knotted black pine trees are
added to both sides of the ring. These trees were meant to represent the
"witness" and "council" tree, a symbol of indigenous people in the township,
they came down in the 1980s after they were struck by lightning. In the center
is an old depiction of the township hall, when it was still a schoolhouse. The
bell along with its tower were removed in the 1960s when it was converted to the
township hall. Two red baroque bars were added to both sides of the emblem.
Under the emblem is a sign with the township incorporation date, that being
1839. Two black roads surround the emblem in a way to how the two roads look in
Mason Township. These are Mason Street, and U.S. Route 12, also known as Old
Chicago Road. Four red baroque devices are added to the four corners of the
flag. The finishing touches of two thin horizontal golden stripes are added as
well.
Here is the Description of the flag made by the township
themselves:
Mason Township boasts of having the only township flag in
Cass County, MI. In 1998, officials asked residents for design ideas. The late
Bob Brockus submitted his idea and Irene Thompson incorporated it into the
layout. She arranged to have the flag made and personally fringed it in gold. An
applique of the Township Hall set in a gold seal rests on a white background,
bordered by the main roads in the Township, US 12 (Sauk Trail) and Mason Street.
