image located by Valentin Poposki, 12 April 2026The municipality of Cruz del Eje (30,680 inhabitants in 2010) is located in the northwest of the Córdoba Province, 150 km from Córdoba City.
Cruz del Eje is of unknown precise origin, its foundation being related by different local legends.
A first legend is related by the poet Ataliva Herrera (1888-1953) in the poem "Bamba" (1933), part 5; the poet describes the single combat between Captain Tristán de Allende and Cacique Olayón, which ended with the simultaneous death of the two fighters. The event, reported in several chronicles kept in the historical archives of the Córdoba Province, was commemorated by the erection of a cross.
The second legend was published under the pseudonym "Namúm Curá" in the newspaper "Los Principios", 6 September 1927. The author relates the sad death of the merchant Tomás lturrilicoechea in a cart accident. The merchant fell down on the head and broke his neck after an axlet ("eje") of his cart had broken down.
According to the historian Juan Carlos Lozada Echenique, the name of the town, undoubtedly, refers to a cross made of cart's axlets. There is no hint, however, on whom may have decided to erect the cross.
The town of Cruz del Eje was not founded from scratch; it was progressively established by descendants of the Spanish colonists who owned estates near Siguiman and San Marcos. Other colonists came from
Punilla and another few more from the town of Córdoba.
On 2 September 1735, Francisco de Baigorrí asked to Juan de Armaza y Arregui, Governor of Tucumán, the concession of the lands "commonly known as Cruz del Eje". Judge Estanislao de Toledo Pimentel signed the act of property on 22 September 1735. These are the first documents mentioning Cruz del Eje as a specific territory.
Cruz del Eje is the birth town of the singer Jairo (b. 1949 as Mario Rubén González), performer of more than 500 songs in Spanish, French and Italian.
The Department of Cruz del Eje was established by the Provincial Decree of 15 July 1856, seceding from Punilla. The Department is made of the municipalities of Soto (1888), Serrezuela (1925), San Marcos (1953) and Cruz del Eje (4 June 1890).
The Bishopric of Cruz del Eje was established on 12 August 1963.
The flag of Cruz del Eje is prescribed by Municipal Ordinance No. 1,382 of 2 April 1999.
The flag is horizontally divided olive green-white-sky blue. In the middle of the flag is placed a yellow
12-pointed sun superimposed with a brown map of the department charged with a yellow triangle.
White is the colour of cotton. The yellow triangle represents the location of the town of Cruz del Eje in the department of the same name.

It is written that the flag was "apparently" officially unveiled in 2012. But
the text they show just below says: "This project was submitted to the
Deliberative Council by the April 2nd Gaucho Association, and this aspiration
was formalized in Ordinance No. 1382/99". Could this refers to 1999 instead of
2012? Or is it only for an initial project?

The blogpost at
https://heraldicaargentina.blogspot.com/2022/09/escudo-de-cruz-del-eje-cordoba.html,
by Alejandro Pomar, unfavorably compares this flag to its respective
coat-of-arms, presented above: "Desafortunadamente, la bandera municipal no
está a la altura del digno escudo."
It caught
my eye, however, that neither the municipal coat of arms nor the municipal flag
reflect the superficial meaning of the toponym, which can be translated as "axis
cross" (lit., "cross of the axis").

Ischilin, Cordoba. Its flag was adopted in December 2024.
"In November
(2024), the "Create the Flag of Los Chañaritos" contest was held. It was an
invitation to the community to recognize the values that define us as
residents of Los Chañaritos, to investigate our past, to learn more about our
natural environment and our potential, and to build connections and
conversations about our present and future. The town's flag will be the flag of

Commune of Media Naranja was adopted in November 2024.
The chosen design
is the creation of Ana Luz Nieto, an 18-year-old programming student and
resident of Media Naranja. It was selected from 54 proposals through a rigorous
evaluation process.
The jury consisted of Mayor Juan Carbello, renowned
Argentine ceremonialist Cristian Baquero Lazcano, Andrea Puglie, a collaborator
with the "Our Flag" Program, parish priest Gustavo Orellana, Justice of the
Peace Oscar García, Secretary of Government Osvaldo Luna, and Claudia Sobrero,
director of the Arturo Capdevila Higher Education Institute.
The flag, chosen
after several rounds of voting, features three horizontal stripes and a central
sun. It seeks to capture the historical and cultural essence of Media Naranja:
The upper orange band represents the warmth, creativity, and vitality of the
town's people, as well as paying homage to characteristic crops such as cotton,
olives, garlic, and tomatoes.
The central white stripe symbolizes peace and
unity. It honors the historic Church of Our Lady of Luján, the community's
spiritual center since 1923.
The lower sky-blue band evokes the protective
sky, the Cruz del Eje River, and the pride of Córdoba and Argentina.
The
central sun (golden yellow) is inspired by the sun on the flag of Córdoba. It
reflects the balance between tradition and progress, with 16 rays symbolizing
the hope for a bright future.
A symbol of identity and vision:
The
Media Naranja flag not only honors the past of this corner of Córdoba province,
but also projects its vision of development and community into the future. In
the words of Mayor Juan Carbello: “This flag is the soul of our town; an emblem
that carries with it the strength, faith, and hard work of everyone who makes
Media Naranja what it is.”
The event, which saw broad participation from
residents, marked a milestone in the history of this town, which continues to
grow and stand out as a unique place in the heart of Córdoba.

The upper orange band takes up only one third of the flag area, while "media
naranja" means "half orange". This ambiguous phrase has the same polysemy
also in the Spanish original, so it’s not fully a canting/punning flag.

The flag was officially adopted on 05.09.2025.
This historic town in the Cruz del Eje department now has its first official
flag, following an open and participatory process. The competition brought the
community together in an unprecedented event for the town, receiving 238 graphic
proposals submitted in 94 envelopes. This remarkable response made it the most
popular municipal flag competition in the entire province of Córdoba, surpassed
only by the 2010 provincial flag selection, which garnered 752 proposals. In
percentage terms, the number of submissions in Villa de Soto represents an
overwhelming record of citizen participation in the creation of a symbol of
identity. The process was led pro bono by Professor Dr. Cristian Baquero
Lazcano, a national and international expert in the creation of official
symbols, and was conducted under a rigorous framework of historical, symbolic,
and vexillological research. A diverse jury comprised of the Cruz del Eje
departmental legislator, municipal authorities, cultural representatives,
teachers, professionals, and local residents participated in the selection
process.
A historic day
The selection session took
place in the Main Hall of the Villa de Soto Bus Terminal. The jury meticulously
analyzed each proposal according to criteria of technical validity, creativity,
message, and representativeness. After an initial selection of three finalists,
the proposal submitted under the pseudonym “Teo,” by Leila Ivana Gómez, a
university graduate in Ceremonial and Protocol (Universidad Siglo XXI), was
chosen as the winner by majority vote, obtaining 42 points in the final vote.
The corresponding minutes, drawn up on September 5, 2025, establish the official
adoption and mandatory use of the flag in all protocol and institutional events,
pursuant to Ordinance No. 1391/2024.
The winning proposal was called
“Serrano Gold, White Road, and Federal Roots.”
The chosen design synthesizes the historical,
cultural, and natural values of Villa de Soto on its flag:
Gold field
(upper 2/3): represents the ancient “Fertile Valley” that gave Soto its name; it
evokes the mountains, the clay soils, the domes of the San Roque Church, and the
municipal motto “History that flows.”
Central white stripe (1/6): symbolizes
peace, fresh air, and community organization; it recalls the whitewashed
galleries of La Recova, the sands of the La Toma resort, and connects with the
flags of Córdoba and Argentina.
Lower red stripe (1/6): alludes to federal
memory, the journeys of Facundo Quiroga and “Chacho” Peñaloza; it honors the
Henia-Comechingones, for whom red was a color of identity and strength.
Stylized white sun: unites mountains and river; it evokes devotion to San Roque
and the procession of August 18; it provides contrast and Legibility,
reaffirming the idea of faith and a shared dawn.
As a whole, the emblem
combines territory, history, and future prospects; the gold celebrates the
valley and its prosperity, the white unites the community, and the red affirms
indigenous and federal roots. The sun, located in the center, invokes faith and
a shared future.
