The municipality of Pedralva (11,351 inhabitants in 209; 217 sq. km) is
located in southern Minas Gerais. Originally known as São Sebastião do Capituba
(1763), the parish created in 1832 was renamed in 1880 São Sebastião da Pedra
Branca and incorporated into the municipality of Cristina. Created in 1884, the
municipality of Pedra Branca was renamed Pedralva in 1943.
The flag is
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 555, adopted on 9 April 1978 by the Municipal
Council.
"Article 1.
The municipal flag shall be in 1.30 m x 2.00 m
dimension, with the following characteristics. Three horizontal stripes, the
first, blue, 40 cm, representing the limpid sky over our land; the second,
white, 50 cm, representing peace celebrated by our people; the third, green, 40
cm, representing the forests of our territory. A red triangle, in the middle of
the flag, on the white and blue stripes, the symbol representing our State. The
Pedra Branca (White Rock), placed in the triangle, representing the symbol of
our municipality and the origin of the name of our town. A black background from
which the Pedra Branca emerges. The crop branches representing cane and coffee,
the symbols of our diversified agriculture.
Article 2.
The idea of the
flag shall be credited to the Pedralva-born young student in engineering,
Sebastião Donizetti Monti Souza.
Article 3.
This law shall be into force
on the day of its publication."

The rock shown on the flag is the top spur of Serra Pedra Branca (1,847 m asl).

Oddly enough, the image of the flag shown on the top of the Law does not
match the specifications prescribed by the Law. The flag shown here is as prescribed by Law (size of the emblem not prescribed,
however).

"Pedra branca" means indeed "white stone" in Portuguese, as also does
"pedra alva", which can be shortened to "pedr’alva" or "pedralva", with some
Latinate flavour, so this is a canting flag. "Capituba" means "thick
bush" in the extinct local Puri language. More info:
http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedralva_%28Minas_Gerais%29, where is says that
Pedralva BR-MG has arguably the best sugar cane brandy (cachaça) in
Brazil, and that it is known as City of Twins -- none of these shown on the
flag."
