The municipality of Flórida (2,689 inhabitants in 2019; 8,305 ha) is located
470 km north-west of Curitiba.
Flórida was established by the Companhia
de Terras Norte do Paraná to develop cotton cultivation. According to Gilmar
Moreira, the town's name was coined by the American land surveyor who delimited
the territory.
Luis Mendes Barbosa, who acquired on 17 March 1949 plots No. 8
and 9 in quadrant No. 19, is considered as the founder of the town; he was
stabbed to death on 20 January 1950 by one of his employees.
The district of
Flórida was established as part of the municipality of Astorga by State Law No.
35 promulgated on 9 November 1955, to be elevated a municipality, separating
from Iguaraçu, by State Law no. 24,245 promulgated on 25 July 1960.

The flag of Flórida is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 37
promulgated on 17 September 1966.
The flag is horizontally divided
red-blue with the municipal coat of arms in the center.
The flag's colors and
symbols highlight the municipality's beauties and origin.
Red represents
people's valor, inherited from the founders led by Companhia Melhoramentos Norte
do Paraná, whose initiative and intrepidity resulted in the promising nucleus
called Flórida.

The coat of
arms of Flórida is of semi-oval shape, with the white, blue, green, red and
yellow colors, divided in four quarters.
The first quarter is blue with a
lyre argent.
The second and third quarters are chequy green and white.
The
fourth quarter is red with a golden star.
The shield is supported by plants
of cotton and castor bean, fructed proper.
Beneath the shield a scroll argent
inscribed "FLÓRIDA" in blue letters.
The shield is surmounted by a mural
crown proper to municipalities.
Blue recalls people's serenity in search
of industrial and cultural development.
Green recalls the colors of the state
and national flags and represents fertile soil and profuse harvests.
Argent
represents the rivers and streams watering the municipality, which allow perfect
and natural immigration.
Red recalls the valor of Flórida's founders.
The
supporters are crops of great municipal, state and national significance.
