The municipality of Mogi Guaçu (138,244 inhabitants in 2010; 81,314 ha) is located in central São Paulo State, 170 km of São Paulo.

Mogi Guaçu was established by pioneers near the river of the same name, meaning "The Cobras' Great River" in Tupi-Guarani language. The economic development of the settlement started with coffee cultivation and the subsequent establishment of the railway by the "Companhia Mogiana de Estradas de Ferro" (1875). Following the abolishment of slavery, the town was settled by Italian immigrants who started ceramics, the first of them being Father José Armani, owner of a tilery.

The flag of Mogi Guaçu is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 492 of 22 July 1966. The flag is vertically divided yellow-red with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.

Red represents a type of clay ("taguá" - from a Tupi-Guarani word meaning "red clay") abundant in the region, while yellow represents the wealth provided by this clay to the municipality.

The coat of arms of Mogi Guaçu is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 244 of 21 August 1959. The coat of arms is made of a rounded-off, Portuguese shield divided into three parts, surmounted by a mural crown argent whose central port is surmounted by an oval escutcheon azure (blue) charged with a fleur-de-lis [or]. The upper left quarter of the shield shows a pioneer's jacket on a blue background. The upper right quarter of the shield shows a brick oven argent on a background gules (red). The third quarter shows on a field vert (green) a fess wavy argent. The shield is supported dexter by a branch of coffee fructed and sinister by a branch of cotton fructed. Below the shield is a scroll argent inscribed with the motto "HONOR ET GLORIA" [Latin, Honour and Glory] in letter gules (red).

Coffee, cotton and the jack recall the pioneers. The brick oven recalls ceramics industry. The green part represents the fields, while the fess wavy represents river Mogi Guaçu.
