Shield Or an eagle Sable, on his breast an inescutcheon lozengy of Argent and Azure.
Meaning:
Schongau was ruled by the Swabian branch of the Welfen kin until the 12th century. The Staufen kin gained their possessions in 1191 by a testamentary contract. Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa incorporated the possesssions completely into the Staufen lands. The eagle is that one of the German kings, which had been from the Staufen kin in the 12th century. The first seal made of bronze with prints since 1270 probably was made shortly before the city was acquired by the Wittelsbach kin in 1268. It displayed the royal eagle alone. The inescutcheon with the Bavarian lozenges was engraved into the 2nd seal made before 1393. This pattern was also displayed in main seal and secret seal from 1496 with the number of that year in the circumscriptions. Those seals had additional red stripes like a narrow chief. Those stripes had also been part of the combat shields of the city during the late Gothic period. The current pattern remained alone since 1523. Afterwards the inescutcheon was sometimes omitted. The flag colours are the royal and imperial colours of Germany.
