Sociedad Anónima Navegación e Industria is the successor of a company set up by Reynals, Vilardaga and Granell, who were granted on 9 March 1830 by King Ferdinand VII a privilege to build in England a steamship named Balear, for the service of a scheduled line between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca; the company eventually operated two English steamships named Delfín and Mercurio.
The company was officially set up on 23 March 1841. In 1910, it was granted the service of the scheduled lines between Cádiz and the Canary Islands. The same year, the company was purchased by the Tyne Tees Steamship Co..

The house flag of Sociedad Anónima Navegación e Industria (Bilbao), as shown in Lloyd's book of house flags and funnels of the principal steamship lines of the world and the house flags of various lines of sailing vessels [llo12], published at Lloyd's Royal Exchange. London. E.C. (1912, online version), is blue with the white letters "N.Y.".
