Communist Party (Partito Comunista; PC) was founded in 2009 as the
Communists – Popular Left (Comunisti - Sinistra Popolare; CSP) by
former members of the Party of Italian Communists as
an "anti-revisionist" Marxist–Leninist party [1, 2, 3]. In 2012, it was renamed
into the Communists – Popular Left – Communist Party (Comunisti Sinistra
Popolare - Partito Comunista), eventually adopting its current name in 2014
[1, 2]. In 2013, it was one of the founding members of the Initiative of
Communist and Workers' Parties, the organization of European Marxist–Leninist
parties, and since 2017,
it is also a participant of the International
Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties, the worldwide gathering of such
parties [1, 2].

The current flag of the Communist Party is red, with large hammer, sickle and
star in white, occupying top and central parts of the field, with the party name
inscribed below in two rows in white, all letters uppercase, the second word
placed over a black horizontal stripe; the ratio is 1:1 [4, 5]. The design also
serves as the election symbol of the party [1, 3].

The previous party flag has differed in the color of hammer, sickle and star,
which were yellow [1, 3, 4, 6, 7]. Adopted along with the name change in 2012,
it was replaced with the current version in 2013, so as to be able to register
the design as the election symbol without the problems [1, 3], for it was
considered too similar to that of the
Communist Refoundation Party.

On the original flag of the Communists – Popular Left, the hammer, sickle and
star were smaller and the party name was inscribed as follows: word comunisti
(all letters lowercase) on a white stripe along the top edge, word Sinistra
(only S uppercase) on red field beneath the hammer and sickle, and word popolare
(all letters lowercase) on a black stripe below; the black stripe was wider
and bottom red "margin" was narrower than on later flags, while the ratio was
the same [7, 8, 9].
