PD (Partito Democratico = Democratic Party)
The PD was founded in 2007
as a merger of mainly DS and
Margherita; a couple of smaller parties
were also involved (Italia di Mezzo, Alleanza Riformista, Partito Democratico
Meridionale, Progetto Sardegna). The merger led to several splits: mainly ApI to
the right and SD to the left. The PD is the largest party in the center-left
spectrum and is usually described as social-democratic. In a historical and also
symbological sense it is somewhat a continuation of the earlier Ulivo alliance.
The PD-led alliance lost the 2008 elections and (more or less) won the February
2013 elections. It holds 293 seats in the Camera dei Deputati and 109 in the
Senato.
The symbol is the party abbreviation in the national colours,
sometimes with the full party name and an olive branch (as a reference to the
earlier Ulivo alliance). The two mainly used flags are banners-of-arms: the
first includes full party name and olive branch (above) [1,2,3,4,5]. The second
version just uses the "PD" spread over the whole flag cloth (below) [6,7,8,9].
