Located in Kunitachi City Tokyo and established in 1920. The Embroidered ceremonial flag has red background with a gold color emblem in the center and gold fringe. Hitotsubashi University's emblem, "Mercury," is a design of the staff of Mercurius, the Roman god of commerce and scholarship and or Hermes in Greek mythology with two serpents coiled around it and flapping wings at the top. The serpent represents wisdom,and signifies that one should always be as wise as a serpent and sensitive to the world, and the wings signify soaring over the world and soaring over the Five Great Continents. It was adopted around 1887, when the Tokyo Commercial School was upgraded to a higher commercial school, on the initiative of Arthur Marischal (1857-unknown date of death), a teacher from the Belgian Higher Commercial School in Amvers (Antwerp), and Ryuzo Naruse, the head teacher. The university emblem is accompanied by the initials C and C for Commercial College, indicating the special status of a "higher" commercial school, which distinguishes it from ordinary commercial schools.
