I was informed by the Municipal Council that the coat of arms was adopted in 1987 and designed by Prof. Luis González Martínez. It was adopted through a petition from Municipal President Desiderio Ortegón Cauich in his second year; Luis came up with three proposals, with the one chosen being adopted as the municipal coat of arms. Description according to theEncyclopedia of Municipalities and Delegations:
The municipality has a coat of arms which is described in the following manner: in the lower part of the coat of arms, five wells are found, representing the name of Hopelchén [Place of five wells]; in the middle, a honeycomb with a bee as a producer of honey and wax [should be noted that it might have been replaced with a map of the municipality over the state's]; in the upper-right part, a group of wood, for being the producer of the finest wood. In the upper-left part a Mayan pyramid, remembering that it was the place where the Mayan culture was seated. Above the coat of arms, a corn cob indicates that this municipality produces corn in great quantities.
