Background

At the Berlin Conference of 1884 and 1885, the area that would become the Northern Nigeria Protectorate was allocated to Britain. Initially the Royal Niger Company was given administrative responsibility for the area but its Charter was revoked on 01 January 1890 and the British assumed direct control. A protectorate was proclaimed in 1900 under a High Commissioner. The Protectorate ended in 1914 when it was unified with the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and the Lagos Colony to form the northern province of the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria.

The Northern Nigeria Protectorate flew a blue ensign defaced with the badge of the protectorate in the fly.

The badges for both Northern and Southern Nigeria were added to the 1889 Admiralty Flag Book by an amendment issued in March 1901. I have not seen the text that went with the illustrations and don't know whether the defaced Union Jacks were used by High Commissioners as well as Governors.
