First mentioned in 1450. Town rights bestowed in 1458 by King Kazimierz (Casimir) Jagiellonian In 1774 annected to Prussia. The Prussians were chased out by the local partisans on January 5, 1919. Lost city rights in 1934.
Arms and flag adopted on April 24, 2003 (resolution # V/30/2003)
Arms granted in 1641 by King Władysław IV (Ladislaus IV): royal white
eagle (crowned) on red and the black key.
