Shield Vert a fess Argent masoned and fimbriated Sable, flanked by a boundary stone Argent charged with an escutcheon Azure charged with five plates in quincunx and by a chestnut branch fruited and leafed Or with it opened fruit Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "SOUTELINHO DA RAIA".
Meaning:
The escutcheon displays a quina, one of the oldest arms of Portugal.
A different coat of arms, with evident common motives, shows on this photo of an actual flag, also yellow, included without context in a
local’s blog; archived at [ https://archive.ph/py6pt ]
This variant Coat of Arms, likely an earlier version, later adjusted by the CHAAP but not before it made it to the cloth in at least this one copy, has also a green shield, with the cobbled stripe slanted, and slightly different interpretations of the remaining elements: Vert a bend sinister Argent masoned Sable flanked by a chestnut branch Or with its fruit open Gules and by a representation of a boundary stone Argent.
The phrase ´soutelinho da raia´ means ´little chestnut grove on the border´; the arms can be interpreted as being canting for this meaning.
