It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of blue and white.

Shield Azure, a castle Argent masoned Sable with port and windows Gules, having an embattled wall and two embattled towers, in chief a waxing crescent Argent, surrounded by six 5-point stars Or ordered 1:2:2:1. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and grey scroll with inscription in black capitals "VILA DE LINHARES".
Please note that e.g. Ralf Hartemink displays the shield with purple background. The upper half displays the pattern given by Ignacio de Vilhena Barbosa in his book "As cidades e villas da Monarchia portuguesa que teem brazão d'armas".
