It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of red and white.

Shield Argent, issuant from base three peaks Vert, in chief a cross fleury fitchy Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "COLOS".
Meaning:
The cross is alluding to the Knights' Order of Santiago.
