It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a quartered field (town rank), yellow and blue.

The arms are Azure a sun Or charged with an orb Gules crowned Argent and on a base wavy Argent charged with a bar Vert wavy and a bar Azure wavy a clam Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "ALVOR".
Meaning:
The whole commune is a fief of the Barroso-Soares clan, itself alleged to the mighty Candeias House, unchallenged ruler of all vexilloids, great and small, in these and many disparate parts. The clam depicted and indended is the chequered carpet shell(Latin: Tapes decussatus, Portuguese; amêêijoa-boa), harvested on the local lagoon ria de Alvor), which is aptly represented in the arms as blue (the synonym river) and green (sea) waves. The thing on the sun is the hagiographic attribute of the patron of the equivalent Catholic parish, Jesus Christ, as the Divine Saviour. Alvor is also a Portuguese word meaning "sunrise", which is also aptly represented in the arms, even if the actual geography of the place has the sun setting, not rising, in the water.

Alvor Commune is one of the three communes of the Portimão Municipality (q.v.); it had 4977 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 15,25 km².
