Coat of Arms

[Várzea de Meruge commune CoA (until 2013)] image by António Martins-Tuválkin andSérgio Horta, 8 July 2025

Shield Vert an escutcheon Argent bearing a cross fleury Vert, in chief a forget-me-not plant eradicated Argent, on base wavy Argent a barrulet wavy Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "VÁRZEA DE MERUGE".
Meaning:
The cross is that one of Order of Avis. The word "várzea" means "floodplain", especially of the non-tidal, non-brackish sort (which is rather termed a lezíria), so the wavy base could be said to be partly canting; "meruge" means "forget-me-not" (Latin: Myosotis), one of several synonyms: the arms are canting for this meaning, too. The forget-me-not plant is unexpectedly depicted (as blazoned) without any flowers.
