It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain purple field.

Shield Argent, a vine wreath Vert set in fess with five grape bunches Purpure, in chief a bugle Gules stringed Sable and, in base wavy Azure a barrulet wavy Argent charged with two fish Gules eyed Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "MATELA - VIMIOSO".

Flag and arms published in the official journal Diário da República: II Série on 7 July 2011, although the Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP) had mase its positive assessment already seven years before on 5 June 2003.
