About the district

Although not called the "National District" (it was proclaimed as such on October 10, 1931) it is classified as the district of the titular nationality (Район с «титульной» нацией) on the linguistic basis. Gornomariyskiy language (Mountain Marii) is considered either as the dialect of Marii or a separate language, depending on whom you would like to listen to.

• Area: 1730 sq.km
• Population: 28,400 (2005)
• Administrative center: Kozmodemyansk (which lies outside the territory of the District, which doesn't have any cities or towns - totally rural area)
• Head of the Administration: Leonid Zinovyevich Kubekov
