The Decision on the municipal holiday Odlok o dolocitvi obcinskega praznika Občine Vitanje, adopted on 6 July 1995 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 42/1995, describes the coat of arms and its history. It states, among others, that the coat of arms was that of the lords of Vitanje, and that it was later taken up by the town of Vitanje, in some unspecified time.
