Municipal flag of Cerkvenjak

The flag and coat of arms of the Local Community (subdivision of a municipality) of Cerkvenjak are prescribed by Decision Sklep o grbu in zastavi Krajevne skupnosti Cerkvenjak, adopted on 6 February 1998 and published on 20 March 1998 in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, No. 22.
The text in the official gazette does not include either a description or an image; the same design was most probably later (re)adopted for the newly formed municipality.

The flag is rectangular, in proportions 2:3, light blue with the coat of arms in the middle. It shall always be hoisted vertically.
However, the municipal website shows the flag with proportions c. 2:5, like several other Slovene municipal flags.

Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] give the colour specifications as:

Red N 8816
Blue N 9950
Grapes N 8825
Brown N 8028

The Local Community of Crkvenjak v Slovenskih goricah initiated a public contest for its symbols in 1997. The readers were reminded the traditional, humorous coats of arms used in various villages in the community: a hat with a feather (Crkvenjak), a leather belt (Andrenci), dried hackberries (Brengova), baskets (Cogetinc), an empty bag (Čagona), a ladder (Smolinci), and a cow tail (župetinci) (Tednik, 16 January 1997).
Tne jury short-listed during its first sezsion six out of the 12 proposed designs, among them three might be amended to make an acceptable design. The jury stated that no propsal was fully satisfactory, and that they will consult experts. They could not decided on any proposal for the flag, either. The illustration shows a design that might have led to the adopted design, showing only the church in a somewhat "cruder" heraldic style (župetinci) (Tednik, 27 March 1997).
The last session of the jury determined to have the coat of arms divided into halves, one with the church that gave the place name, and the other with grapes and apple. The flag was to be light blue, with the coat of arms, to be unveiled in the summer festivities. (župetinci) (Tednik, 15 May 1997).
The symbols were unveiled in July 1997 (župetinci) (Tednik, No. 14, 3 July 1997).

The coat of arms is divided diagonally; its lower part is light blue with the St. Anthony church and surrounding buildings, whereas its upper part is green with an apple and a bunch of grapes. Above the shield is a red rectangular panel inscribed with the name of the place. The name of the municipality alludes to a verger and therefore the inclusion of the church in the coat of arms makes the arms kind of canting.
