The Migrations Central Office (Oficína Central de Migración) was established
by the Law on Migration in El Salvador, promulgated on 21 June 1933, and
subsequently renamed to Directorate General of Migration (Dirección General de
Migración). A formal register of recorded terrestrial migrations was initiated
in 1938.
The first Law on Foreigners was promulgated on 1 October 1986. The
DGME was established in April 2002 as the merger of the Directorate General of
Migration and of the Department of Foreigners (Departamento de Extranjería).
The flag of the DGME is white with the directorate's logo.
