is an article about the flag of North Vernon.
North Vernon held a contest
in 1988 to design a city logo that would also be used on a flag. The winning
logo was designed by resident Patty Franks and was described by her in this way:
“The caboose represents the past of which North Vernon grew. The sun and
its rays represent the bright future and the many horizons ahead. Last but not
least, the symbol of people (man, woman, child) shows the past, present and
future. This community is a community that cares about all its people.”
Although the logo was made official, it was, for some reason, not used or put on
a flag. However, when a closet at city hall was being cleaned out in January
2020, a manila envelope holding a drawing of the logo, a newspaper article, and
a sale and release agreement signed by the mayor and the designer was
rediscovered. On September 9, 2021, 33 years after becoming official, a flag
with the logo will be flown.
