Description of the flag

Van Lear is an unincorporated community and former coal town located on the Levisa fork and Miller Creek.

The flag is a blue field with a gradient bar of black and a light purplish color. In the center of the flag is a mule, also known as a Bank mule which refers to how mules would be used to pull coal cars in and out of coal mines. Above the mule is a ribbon with the community name and establishment year on it. Under the mule is the slogan "From Coal To Community, Our Legacy Lives On."
