An image of the McKinley county flag can be seen at the [Gallup Independent | https://gallupindependent.photoshelter.com/image/I0000t6bnoeTaYYc] The flag was adopted sometime between the second half of 2017 and January 2018. This was done because of the adoption of its new seal and logo.

At the [Gallup Independent | https://gallupindependent.photoshelter.com/image/I0000cBthRs.eeLg], we can see that the county commission previously used another flag (before 2018). It consisted of a red field with some sort of charge imposed upon it, though unclear if it was a county logo or something similar.

Until the adoption of the new flag by 2018, the original McKinley County flag consisted of a blue field with its seal centered upon it. The seal consists of a black circle, bearing another circle within in blue edged in a traditional pattern. A ring is found within it reading "MCKINLEY COUNTY" and "NEW MEXICO" arched above and below; the ring is outlined in red. The innermost circle depicts an image of the county courthouse, with its flag and greenery beside it. Flag adopted for its hoisting in the state capitol in January 1993.

Description from https://www.co.mckinley.nm.us/360/Seal-and-Logo: "The Chief, a figure filled with strength and confidence, pointing the way to the horizon. He holds the torch of illumination, advancement, and progress. He gazes, unafraid, on the future while still honoring and being deeply rooted in tradition. He looks to the east, the direction of life. He is full of hope as he resolutely anticipates the sunrise. He is an experienced leader. He instills inspiration in his people who rely on his service, guidance, and authority.
The figure is paired with a typeface that is classical: elegant, stately, and polished. It has an authority about it that does not need to shout with bold or thick lines, but demands attention with its simple dignity. It allows the attention to be held by the figure while confidently maintaining its own ground.
The color palette signifies deep ties to the earth, the sacred land in which the figure resides. His silver-patterned wristband represents his refined skill and trade. The torch he bears is Romanesque in design, signifying democracy, justice, and equality. And the fire he bears is that which warms and provides insight to all of humanity.
This strong icon is a unique mark that embodies the essence of what McKinley County is, the principals it was founded on, and the ideals and goals to which it strives. It blends elements of Native tradition with the classic symbols of American democracy, a relationship that perfectly represents the heart of McKinley County governance."
