A RESOLUTION TO ADOPT A NEW FLAG FOR THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA.Aleksandar Nemet, 8 September 2012
WHEREAS, the current City flag was created in 1923 and was adopted by the City Commission on July 24, 1923;
and WHEREAS, this flag is unknown to citizens and has rarely been used;
and WHEREAS, symbols, such as flags, build national and local pride and loyalty and are important for universities, sports teams, businesses, products, and organizations, including cities;
and WHEREAS, this resolution will retire the current flag to a place of honor and to adopt a new flag;
and WHEREAS, a new flag will have the City's official seal in the middle of three identically-sized, horizontal bars (two green bars which represent mountains flanking a blue bar of the Tennessee River in the middle of the green bars) which displays pride and spirit of the City;
and WHEREAS, the new flag will support the City's strategy to market itself as the "Scenic City"; "The Outdoor City"; "The Green City"; "The Sustainable City"; and "Green City, Blue Streams";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, That the City of Chattanooga shall adopt a new flag for the City of Chattanooga consisting of three identically-sized, horizontal bars (two green bars which represent mountains flanking a blue bar of the Tennessee River in the middle of the green bars) as depicted in the attached photo.
