Princeton was founded by Scottish Presbyterians in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, a name it retained until it was redesignated Princeton University in 1896. The coat of arms of the university was introduced at the same time, Tenne'
a chevron sable and on a chief of the same an open book proper inscribed "VET NOV TESTAMENTVM," which the university says signifies "Old and New Testaments." The flag is white with the arms on the center, including a scroll with the motto "Dei sub numine viget" ("Under God's power she flourishes." This flag is displayed on the tomb of Woodrow Wilson at Washington Cathedral; before becoming President of the United States, Wilson had been president of Princeton and governor of New Jersey.
