The book is the result of an exhibition in the Hermitage Museum. With 168 pages filled with magnificent colour illustrations of arms and a few flags, photos of various objects with the arms, etc. it is truly an exceptional book. It has an introductory essay on the history of the arms. Text is in English and Russian. The book is expensive, though: DEM 154.

A masterpiece of vexillological research, written by a historian working for the Reichsministerium des Innern (Veit Valentin) and a (young) heraldist (Ottfried Neubecker). Most of the book is text (not straightforward to read as it is printed in Fraktur font) with only twelve plates of excellent flags and coats-of-arms images by Neubecker. The first part studies in depth the origin of the German colours, both the black-red-yellow and the black-white-red; the second part contains many literal quotations from historical legislation on German national flags since 1804 plus an excellent critical bibliography.

It is a very nice plate, A2 size, cream background, on top 4 historical flags of Brittany, then St Yve’s flag and SBV flag, then flags of Breton counties, then flags of towns; all this quite handsome, really professional.

Since 1991 the ideology of bratstvo i jedinstvo in the Republic of Macedonia has gradually been replaced by a new national identity defining itself by means of the Ancient Macedonian heritage and the potentially irredentist “mental map” of Ottoman Macedonian territory. Since the armed ethnic conflict in 2001 the Macedonian Sun, which was imported in 1992 from the transatlantic Macedonian diaspora, has been part of an anti-Albanian discourse which makes use of a mythological Macedonian ethnic continuity dating back to Alexander the Great. The purpose of this discourse is to compete with the myth of Illyrian identity used by radical Albanians to challenge the legitimacy of the Macedonian state.
