Žiar nad Hronom is in central Slovakia, 30 km southwest of Banská Bystrica.
There is a 16th century castle, rebuilt in the 18th century.

has 21 156 inh (1990 census). The city was in Bars (in Slovakian Tekov)
County of Hungary till 1918/1920 (Czechoslovakian Occupation).

The modern name Žiar means "shine".
