Lake Murray is a large reservoir located in central South Carolina near Columbia. Dammed by the Saluda Dam, commonly known as Lake Murray Dam, it was completed in 1930, and was the largest earthbound dam at the time, and the lake itself by the time it was filled was also the largest man-made reservoir in the world. The lake's size has resulted in an area known as "Lake Murray Country" which encompasses parts of the counties of Lexington, Newberry, Richland and Saluda.
The flag was created by local resident Doug Gaines of Chapin, inspired to create one from a friend who made a flag for another lake. He was consulted with the Capitol City/Lake Murray Country regional tourism board on the flag's design, and the design was trademarked by him in 2023. Various local shops sell the flag, and has become a popular symbol for the lake's identity over the past few years, and they are also hoping to see it flown at the South Carolina State Capitol for the lake's 100th anniversary in 2027.
Quoted from the article, "The blue component with the state’s emblem represents both South Carolina and the lake itself. The white band is the dam side of the lake, and the two “swallowtails” on the end represent the Saluda River flowing in to form the reservoir. The red and green fields represent the navigation colors for port and starboard, respectively. They are also tied to the lights on the shore of the lake, which are red on the Chapin side and green on the Lexington side." The year 1927 was when the dam started construction.
